Feature #1155
openConsider adding a domain setting to always open links in a new tab
0%
Description
Provide an option (temporarily in page menu/as well as in domain settings) to always open links in a new tab. This'll help some search engines that don't have this option in their preferences.

- Status changed from New to Feedback
I'm not sure I would ever implement this as I don't imagine it would ever be used by hardly anyone. However, I will leave this feature request open. If there is a large amount of interest I will reconsider.

I do use a few websites myself where I always open the links in new tabs. Perhaps I should reconsider how useful this would be.

- Status changed from Feedback to New
- Priority changed from 4.x to 3.x
There is nothing about this that requires waiting until the 4.x series, so I will move it up to the 3.x series. I am still not completely sure I will implement it, but I am leaning in that direction.

Would you perhaps consider making this the default on the "Incognito"-browsing mode? Because, whilst using this mode i tend to forget sometimes to long-press on each link to open it in a new tab.

Unlike with some other browsers, with Incognito Mode on Privacy Browser I can't think of any privacy advantage to opening a link in the current tab compared to opening it in a new tab.

Yes? How are the lack of any privacy enhancements relevant to to this particular feature request? It looks to me like a typical cosmetic-changes-to-the-ui request and i just gave an example where auto-opening links in a new tab might actually benefit ${USER}. But seeing how real privacy enhancements are seemingly getting "kicked into the long grass" (webrtc migitation? 3rd-party javascript migitation?) i've finally lost any interest in this project.

Some privacy features require Privacy WebView with the 4.x series. As such, they will be implemented after the 3.x series is complete.
Regarding your earlier comment, many people are used to opening links in new tabs when browsing in incognito mode because on some browsers there is a privacy advantage in doing so. However, in Privacy Browser there is no privacy advantage in doing so because Privacy Browser already does everything when opening a link in the current tab that you have to open a link in another tab to get from those other browsers. Users are still able to open links in new tabs if desired, but I can't imagine any reason why someone would want to always do so when browsing in incognito mode.
However, there are some domains where users might want to always open links in new tabs, which is what this feature request is about.

For those who might be curious, the major reason why people recommend opening links in new tabs is to prevent the sending of the referrer header. But Privacy Browser Android never sends the referrer header under any circumstances, so opening a link in the current tab or in a new tab is exactly that same in that regard in Privacy Browser.

My reason to open this feature request was not for privacy or security, but rather for convenience. I have a habit of opening search results in a new tab, so that I would continue opening other results simultaneously. This became pretty much repetitive for me so why not automate this ?
If implemented, make sure you provide both list of options:
1. Always open in Foreground
2. Always open in Background

Yes. I see the main use case for this would be for search engine domains, so that you can quickly open a bunch of search results without loosing the original search query.
Options for opening in foreground and background are good ideas.
