Based on the lack of a satisfactory response upstream, it appears that DuckDuckGo does not have any immediate intention of fixing the problem. As such, if another privacy minded search provider created a .onion address I will switch to them. Users who would like to see DuckDuckGo fix this issue are encouraged to add their voice to the Reddit bug report linked above. If enough people complain, perhaps DuckDuckGo will improve their response.
