Instead, it would be better to avoid that empty new tab completely & give an option to replace it with homepage or a set localpage as in #289.

Yes, but implementing https://redmine.stoutner.com/issues/289 is complex, while fixing this bug is easy. So, this will be done first and later https://redmine.stoutner.com/issues/289 will be implemented.

Accessing homepage would also then require 2 steps less (instead of opening a new tab > side panel > homepage) which are too many steps to open homepage in the first place.
